Austin Events: June 1 – 6

How was everyone’s Memorial Day weekend?  For someone on summer break, it kind of all runs together sometimes, but this weekend was especially nice for a lot of reasons.  I hope yours was too.

Well, on with the events of the week!

Tuesday, June 1st

La Roux

Check out the British electro-dance duo at La Zona Rosa tonight.  Show is sold out kids.  If you want tix, check out Craigslist.

Murs with Sick Jacken and Nocando

One of hip-hop’s biggest underground stars will be at Emo’s outdoors tonight.  Doors are at 10 pm.  Tickets are $12 and you can buy them here.

Plants and Animals with Lost in the Trees

The nostalgia-inducing indie band will be playing Emo’s as well, indoors, doors at 10 pm.  Tickets are $10 and you can buy them here.

Wednesday, June 2nd

Mishka with Don Chani

Enjoy some mellow reggae tunes indoors at Stubb’s.  Doors are at 9 pm and cost is $12.  Pick up your tickets here.

Pestilence, Warbringer, Goatwhore, Vital Remains, Revocation, Enfold Darkness, Sacrifici

A hard metal show at Emo’s.  Doors at 6 pm, tickets are $15.  Buy them here.

Erika Wennerstrom

The lead singer of The Heartless Bastards begins a residency at Lambert’s.  She goes on at 10 pm and the cost is $10.

Thursday, June 3rd

Follow That Bird Tour Kick Off

Check out the indie pop band at Mohawk on Thursday.  Doors at 10 pm.

Blind Willie Johnson Tribute

A tribute at Momo’s to one of blues’ most influential and soulful guitar heros.  Performing will be: Jon Dee Graham, Kirby Kelley, Jimmy “Preacher” Ellis Band, Biscuit Rollers with Orange Jefferson & Thierry Cognee, Scott H. Biram, Ruthie Foster, Mark Searcy, and Harry Bodine.  Doors are at 5:30 pm and tickets are $15.  You can buy them here.

Voxtrot‘s Farewell Show with Cry Blood Apache, International Waters

One of Austin’s favorite indie bands of the last 5 years, Voxtrot, recently announced that they were calling it quits.  Check out their jangly pop tunes for the last time at Emo’s.  Doors are at 7 pm and tickets are $12.  Buy them here.

Friday, June 4th

Midlake with John Grant

See Midlake ahead of their ACL Festival performance for a steal at Antone’s.  Doors are at 8 pm and tickets are only $13.  Buy them here.

Kid Sister

Check it the lady rapper at Mohawk, doors at 9 pm.

Soundcheck Magazine Presents GIVERS with TV Torso, Searching for Signal

Another ACL Festival artist, The Givers play at Emo’s on Friday night.  Tickets are $10 and you can buy them here.  Doors at 9 pm.

Quiet Company and The Steps

Two great Austin bands play a historic venue: Threadgill’s World HQ.  Cost is $10 and the music starts at 9 pm.

Saturday, June 5th

Melvins with Totimoshi

Check out the popular alternative rock band at Emo’s.  Doors at 9 pm, tickets are $15 and you can buy them here.

Greg Laswell with Brian Wright, Jimmy Gnecco

Singer-songwriter Greg Laswell plays indoors at Stubb’s on Saturday.  Tickets are $12 and you can buy them here.  Doors at 9 pm.

Neil Young‘s “Twisted Road” Tour with Bert Jansch

The rock legend makes a stop at Bass Concert Hall on Saturday.  Tickets start at $59.50 and you can buy them here.  Doors open at 8 pm.

Free Press Summerfest featuring The Flaming Lips, Girl Talk & Slim Thug

Okay, so this isn’t an Austin event, but do I really need to explain why it’s worthy of a look?  The Free Press Summerfest is taking place in Houston at Eleanor Tinsley Park over two days (Saturday and Sunday), doors at 11 am.  Tickets start at just $40 and you can buy them here.

Sunday, June 6th

MGMT with Tame Impala

The psychedelia band is playing at Stubb’s this Sunday.  Doors are at 7 pm.  Tickets are $30 and you can buy them here.  P.S. – Stay tuned for my upcoming review of MGMT’s latest album Congratulations this week!

The Clouds Are Ghosts + Death Is Not a Joyride DJ Set

Night of the Bat with Band of Heathens, Adam West, Batmobile, etc

Band of Heathens plays on the Congress Avenue bridge at 7 pm.  Be there at 6:30 pm to see Adam West and the mayor glad-hand.  This event is FREE and child-friendly.
