SXSW Obsession Part 2: Friday and Saturday Music Showcases

Hi everyone!  Before I start posting the second part of my “SXSW Obsession,” I just had to boast about this image.  How sweet is that?!

Fair warning – there are a ton of worthy showcases on Friday and Saturday, so this will be a long, long post.  Anyway, let it begin!  Click the jump to get started!

SXSW: Friday 3/19 Schedule

Antone’s (213 W 5th St):

Liars headline.  Shows start at 8 pm and the headliner goes on at 1 am.

The bands: Danny Barnes (hosting), Lost in the Trees, Plants and Animals, Basia Bulat, Quasi, Shearwater, Liars

Why you should go to this: Because it’s a solid line-up with good variety.  Orchestral-folk, rock, experimental pop – you definitely will hear interesting music at this The Billions Corporation showcase.

Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces St):

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings headline.  The shows begin at 7 pm and the headliner goes on at 11:30 pm.

The bands: Mayer Hawthorne & The County, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Raphael Saadiq, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings

Why you should go to this: One of the absolute best line-ups out there for SXSW.  It’s going to be a classy and retro night, people!

Central Presbyterian Church (200 E 8th St):

The xx headline.  The shows begin at 7:15 pm and the headliner goes on at 12:30 am.

The bands: Tyler Ramsey, Company, Band of Horses, jj, Holly Miranda, The xx

Why you should go to this: Come early for raucous psychedelic jams courtesy of Company, what is sure to be a gorgeous setting for Band of Horses, and stay late for mysterious and ethereal The xx.

Club De Ville (900 Red River St):

Ra Ra Riot headline.  The shows begin at 9:30 pm and the headliner goes on at 12:30 am.

The bands: Classixx (DJs For The Night), Solid Gold, Tanlines, Neon Indian, Theophilus London, Ra Ra Riot

Why you should go to this: Fantastic dance, electronic, and high-energy line-up!  Go to this Green Label Sound showcase to get your dance freak on!

Emo’s Annex (600 Red River St):

Bear in Heaven headline.  The shows start at 8 pm and the headliner goes on at 1 am.

The bands: TV Torso, Twin Tigers, French Miami, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Crystal Antlers, Bear in Heaven

Why you should go to this: Because it’s sponsored by WOXY.  And because you’ll hear a huge variety of rock, from minimalist, shoegaze, and indie, to the Hot Chip-esque dance rock of Bear in Heaven.

Kenny Dorham’s Backyard (1106 E. 11th St):

Del Castillo headline.  The shows start at 8 pm and the headliner goes on at 11 pm.

The bands: Cerronato, David Garza, Texas Tornados, Del Castillo

Why you should go to this: Presented by The Austin Tejano Music Coalition/Diverse Arts, this showcase is a top TEXAS and Latin band draw.  Expand your horizons and check it out.

Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St.):

Surfer Blood headlines.  The shows start at 9 pm and the headliner goes on at 12:15 am.

The bands: Here We Go Magic, She & Him, Broken Bells, Surfer Blood

Why you should go to this: It’s the ultimate in indie showcases, with just enough vibe from Danger Mouse to give attendees bragging rights.  But it’s not only for hipsters: it’s quality music too.

Victory Grill (1104 E. 11th St):

Bahamadia headlines.  The shows start at 8:30 pm and the headliner goes on at 1:20 am.

The artists: DJ Skeez (Between Sets), Eyeris, Staci Russell, Perseph1, 50/50, Boog Brown, Mae Day, DIAMOND, Miz Korona, Eternia, Psalm One, Invincible, Tiye Phoenix, Bahamadia

Why you should go to this: This is a showcase presented by EMERGENCE Media called The Revival-SXSW, Women in Hip Hop.  Hardcore!  It’s a full line-up of talented ladies from all over the country (and Canada), delivering hip-hop and rap.  You can’t go wrong.

SXSW: Saturday 3/20 Schedule

The Ale House (310 E. 6th St):

Forest City Lovers headlines.  The shows start at 8 pm and the headliner goes on at 1 am.

The bands: Telegraph Canyon, Thrift Store Cowboys, The Mighty Stef, Smoke Fairies, Venice is Sinking, Forest City Lovers

Why you should go to this: Because it’s at a nice little pub and the bands are perfect for the environment.  Check out a variety of folk, Americana, indie, and alt bands at this showcase.

Lamberts (401 W. 2nd St):

Pack of Wolves headline.  The shows start at 8 pm and the headliner goes on at 1 am.

The bands: Dustin Welch, The Bruce James Soultet, The Bright Light Social Hour, L.A.X., Eagle Claw, Pack of Wolves

Why you should go to this: Because it’s sponsored by Represent Austin and showcases a huge variety of what Austin artists have to offer – everything from rock to soul and metal.

The Phoenix (409 Colorado St):

Macy Gray headlines.  The shows start at 7 pm and the headliner goes on at 1:15 am (with a short break between 10:30 and 11:30 pm).

The bands: Grammatics, Crystal Fighters, Class Actress, French Horn Rebellion, Le Castle Vania, DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, Macy Gray

Why you should go to this: Again, variety is key here.  The night starts out with two British bands and ends with Macy Gray, and in-between you’ll hear DJs, electronic music, and pop.  Dance, chill.  Dance, chill.

Soho Lounge (217 E 6th St):

Stardeath and White Dwarfs headline.  The shows start at 8 pm and the headliner goes on at 1 am.

The bands: Gum, The City Lives, The Non, Colourmusic, The Uglysuit, Stardeath and White Dwarfs

Why you should go to this: It’s being presented by the Academy of Contemporary Music @ University of Central Oklahoma and it’s a line-up of all Oklahoma bands.  Call it The Flaming Lips effect – psychedelic and experimental rock are huge there and Coyne nephew-led Stardeath are no exception.  Expect lots of that, but also some folk and indie rock.

St. David’s Bethell Hall (301 E. 8th St):

Balmorhea headline the Western Vinyl showcase.  The shows start at 10 pm and the headliner goes on at 1 am.

The bands: Matthew and the Arrogant Sea, Sleep Whale, Ola Podrida, Balmorhea

Why you should go to this: Check out line-up of several Texas bands, including the gorgeous orchestral tunes of Balmorhea.
