Today’s Musings: Vampire Weekend on Letterman

January 6, 2010

Vampire Weekend performed “Cousins” from their upcoming album Contra last night on Letterman, and it’s hard to tell, but I’m not entirely sure it went well.  Look, I’ve never been a huge fan of Vampire Weekend (if you missed my review of their debut album, you can read it here), but the one thing I did give them credit for is the pure poppiness of it all and last night’s performance didn’t even have that.  It’s as if the entire band, and especially the lead singer Ezra, are trying WAY too hard to top themselves and in the process, losing the one strength they had.  “Cousins” felt and sounded like some pieces of their other earlier songs all mashed together and completely lacked any of the boyish charm that practically carried them through their first album.

Take a gander at their performance and let me know what you think in another AGMG poll situation!
