Austin Events: FREE Week!!

January 5, 2010

Ah, 2010!  Can you feel it yet?  The smell of … teens?  The …delight…of a new decade?  Well, all I know is that I had a great freakin’ New Year’s vacation, today I’m sippin’ coffee after noon, and it’s still FREE week in Austin!  Several venues downtown are hosting free music all week long showcasing local talent.  If you know how much I like FREE things, then you’ll know how excited I am to bring you this list of events!  If you’re not tapped out of cash and are looking to avoid the crowds, I’ll be posting non-FREE events tomorrow.

I’m going to make more of a list for this since there are so many shows to see.

Tuesday, January 5th

El Paso Heist, Commissure, Orchestra of Antlers and Milk Thistle

Tonight at Red7.  If you like progressive experimental rock tunes, this might be the show for you.  Doors open at 9 pm.

Cruiserweight, Lemuria, O’Pioneers!!!, The Anchor

Also at Red7 at 9 pm.

Wednesday, January 6th

Ume, Transmography, Daniel Francis Doyle, Many Birthdays

Probably one of the more interesting offerings for free week…this one will be at Mohawk tomorrow night.  Doors open at 9:30 pm.

Black Panda, John Schooley’s One Man Band, the Fleshlights, The Zoltars

Full on garage rock at Beerland.  Doors at 10 pm.

Friday, January 8th

L.A.X., Auto Body, Freshmillions, GOBI, DJ Thibault

Dance your face off with house music at The Parish.  Doors at 8:30 pm.

The Laughing, Low Line Caller, MoTel Aviv

Inventive indie rock at The Mohawk at 9 pm Friday.

Cartright, Headdress, Tunnels, Christian Bland & the Revelators

Self-described as folk rock/punk/gospel, I don’t really know what to make of Cartright, but it’d be worth the price to find out!  Check it out at 10 pm at Mohawk.

Saturday, January 9th

T Bird and the Breaks, The Carrots, The Ugly Beats, The Hi-Tones

Soul and R&B at the Mohawk on Saturday at 8 pm.

The Bright Light Social Hour, The Frontier Brothers, Dertybird, MoTel Aviv, DJ Billy Q

Winners of the Sound and the Jury ACL Festival contest, catch The Bright Light Social Hour’s brand of indie art rock at The Parish at 8:30 pm.

Missions, Death Is Not A Joyride, No Mas Bodas, The Clouds are Ghosts

Dark experimental tunes at The Mohawk at 10 pm.

Sunday, January 10th
