Song of the Day: Midlake

December 15, 2009

This is “Acts of Man/Rulers Ruling All Things” from Midlake’s long-anticipated follow up to 2006’s The Trials of Van Occupanther (read my review of Van Occupanther here).  The new album is entitled The Courage of Others and is expected out in February of 2010.

The good news for Midlake fans is that the band hasn’t abandoned that other-time-and-place feeling that infused all of Van Occupanther; “Acts of Man/Rulers Ruling All Things” is imbued with flutes and moody acoustic guitar strums as lead singer Tim Smith’s gentle, haunting voice rolls melodically over the track.  New here is the underlying touch of traditional British folk, a Decemberists-esque play for something more like a tale, which works fantastically with Midlake’s knack for weaving together understated harmonies and superb songwriting.

Midlake will be making an appearance in the Live Music Capitol during SXSW next year.  Listen to “Acts of Man/Rulers Ruling All Things” and let me know what you think!
