My friend Barbara is a fan of Ra Ra Riot and really wanted someone to go with her to this show, so I wound up at Emo’s last night. I had heard the name but didn’t know anything about the band or their music (or the other two bands on the bill). I’m not going to say they’re bad, but they’re not for me… i’d describe them as a slimmed-down and poppier Arcade Fire with a Ben Gibbard/Death Cab touch. Which left me thinking two things: I’m really not a fan of Death Cab, and what is Arcade Fire up to these days? Based on Barbara’s and the crowd’s (which was an odd mix of hipsters, emo kids, and frat-type dudes) reaction, they put on a great show for their fans. The opening act, Princeton, just seemed like a non-offensive but bland could-be-any-skinny-jean-wearing-indie-band. But, for the most part, I really liked the second act, Maps and Atlases…more interesting, a little harder to describe (folk tinged?…no rambling 14 minute songs, but jam band-esque?…odd vocals but not in a bad way), and i liked that the drummer could play the xylophone with one hand while continuing to drum with the other.
