SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10TH

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – 12:30 – 1:15 pm

Start Sunday off on a high note by checking out  some British flavored indie punk rock.  Ted Leo and the Pharmacists are one of the biggest indie acts of the moment and the rumor is that their live show is pretty great, so I’d make it a point to be there for this one.

Portugal. The Man – 2 – 3 pm

Sunny alternative-folk from a band with punctuation in their name hailing from Wasilla, Alaska.  How could you go wrong?  After several independent label releases, Portugal. The Man has been signed to Atlantic Records and they’re making their ACL Fest debut this year.

The Morning Benders – 3 – 4 pm

While they didn’t wow me during SXSW at the Levi’s/FADER fort, The Morning Benders are known for producing some gorgeous indie tunes infused with orchestral instrumentation (with some help from Grizzly Bear band member Chris Taylor).  Plus, lead singer Chris Chu has serious vocal chops.  All in all, this should be a great afternoon show.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue – 4 – 5 pm

Ah, controversy!  Yes, seeing this show will make you miss Yeasayer, but there are numerous bands very similar to Yeasayer at this year’s fest.  And while I like Yeasayer too, I am excited to check out this 24 year-old trombone prodigy who caused a stir on the ACL stage a couple of weeks ago.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – 5 – 6 pm

This might be count 2 in the nouveau hippie list, but if you can overlook that, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros will probably be playing the absolute happiest show of the festival.  There’s no denying the catchy, uplifting quality of their tunes – see them if you want to witness another potential festival “moment.”

The Flaming Lips – 6 – 7 pm

I’m not sure why the Lips keep getting sidelined with early evening spots at ACL…why no headlining spot?  After all, a band whose shows have been referred to as “one to see before you die” surely deserve it.  Well, I’m just glad they’re going to be there, even if I have seen them twice this year.  I might have a small obsession.

The National – 7 – 8 pm

On the heels of their massively successful fifth album High Violet, The National hits up ACL Fest in the coveted sunset hour.  Brooding poetic lyrics surrounded by swirling indie rock will definitely leave a lasting impression on those who decide to skip The Eagles’ closing show – like myself.

If you missed it, we’re previewing this year’s ACL Fest.  I’m giving my recommendations of bands to see for each day, and today, we’re looking at Saturday’s schedule.  If you missed my picks for Friday of the fest, check it out here.

Saturday is an entirely different beast, all full of conflicts and tough choices.  Let’s begin!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9TH

Balmorhea – 11:20 am – 12 pm

If you’re going to make an early start on Saturday, you can look forward to catching local band Balmorhea.  A complex mix of classical music, indie, and otherworldly sounds perfect for soundtracks makes this instrumental band the perfect intro to Saturday’s schedule.

Lissie – 12:15 – 1 pm

When you just have to know who the next female voice-of-the-moment is, you’ll want to catch Lissie’s show.  Her full length debut album Catching a Tiger has been heralded by indie magazines and blogs based on the merits of her throaty, powerful vocals.

The Very Best – 12:30 – 1:30 pm

Skip Vampire Weekend on Friday and catch one of the artists pioneering the Afro-Western sound that Ezra Koenig cribs from instead.  (Although, Ezra did appear on The Very Best’s album Warm Heart of Africa, so a guest appearance is always a possibility…)  The Very Best are fresh and fun, and one of the only African-based acts at the fest this year.

Bear in Heaven – 1:30 – 2:30 pm

No, it’s not just the names they have in common: Bear in Heaven is like the love child of Grizzly Bear and Yeasayer.  Sonic psychedelic soundscapes, with a hint of indie pop sensibility to boot.

The Gaslight Anthem – 2:30 – 3:30 pm

The Gaslight Anthem is being heralded as one of America’s best “new” punk bands, but really, they’re a mix of pop, punk, and rock all in one.  Their latest album, The ’59 Sound, was produced by an ex-member of Flogging Molly, they’ve toured with Against Me!, and count Bruce Springsteen among their fans.  See them and feel like you’re at Lollapalooza again.

Mayer Hawthorne & The County – 3:30 – 4:30 pm

The second in the overall don’t-miss category for me is Mayer Hawthorne & The County.  Reviving the traditions of Motown more effectively than anyone else in recent years, Mayer Hawthorne (real name: Andrew Mayer Cohen) has been a fixture on the festival circuit this year.  His smooth crooning will be a major draw at this year’s ACL.

Broken Bells or Silversun Pickups – 4:30 – 5:30 pm

I’ve broken all the rules!  Anarchy!  Chaos!  Okay, not really…but this was a particularly difficult time slot.  Nevermind the Local Natives and Dan Blacks of the world – indie artists on the verge of breaking into the mainstream – I can practically guarantee you’ll get to see them again for cheap while they make their rounds on tour.

The real decision here is between Broken Bells and Silversun Pickups.  As I’ve said before, Broken Bells has a shelf life as a band, so seeing them seems like a given…except for the fact that I’m unsure how their album is going to translate live.  In that case, you may want to go with the safer bet of a great rock show from Silversun Pickups.  I’ll leave this one up to you.

The Temper Trap or The XX – 5:30 – 6:30 pm

Alright, so this one’s just a cop-out.  Here’s the deal…which one of these bands you should see depends on your mood that day.  If you want some sweeping, uplifting pop to dance to, go see The Temper Trap.  If you want some moody, romantic dream pop see The XX.  Both bands have the potential to make their shows a festival “moment,” so follow your gut.

LCD Soundsystem – 6:30 – 7:30 pm

Though I’m not a fan of James Murphy’s general ironic being (a guy making clever music and pretending to be so unhip that it’s extra hip – meh), he certainly has a way of putting together moving, un-ironic indie sounds.  That’s why, ultimately, I’d recommend this show over Monsters of Folk, whose album I wasn’t a big fan of, or Gogol Bordello, who I have seen twice already.  As I mentioned in my reaction to the ACL lineup, I’m going to be at this show so I can check out what all the fuss is about.  I do expect it to be worth it, so there you have it.

Deadmau5 – 7:30 – 8:30 pm

Gimmicks aside, Deadmau5′s ACL Fest performance is one of the most highly anticipated this year.  A perfect sunset backdrop for a club-style dance party outside should make this show exciting and tons of fun to watch.

Muse – 8:30 – 10 pm

Muse is another show I’m going to check out on faith.  I’ve heard nothing but great things about their live shows, and with music that bombastic, how could it not be super-energetic and entertaining?  Plus, M.I.A. traumatized us at her last ACL Fest appearance, so that makes Muse a shoe-in for the Saturday night closer.

Smashing Pumpkins with Bad City

The band that started all things emo comes to Stubb’s tonight.  Doors at 6 pm.  The show is sold out, so check Craigslist if you need some!

Erin Ivey with Jackie Myers Band, Matt McCormack, the Generals, Daniel Harris, Boosy Crazy

Singer-songwriter nights at Momo’s.  Doors at 5:15 pm.  The cover is $5.

Radio Moscow with Bridge Farmers, Secret Trains

See some seriously great electric guitar playing from Radio Moscow.  It’s inside at Emo’s, doors at 9 pm.  Cover is $8.

Bruno Mars

A FREE show, happening at Waterloo Records, tonight at 5 pm.

The Big Give

Well, it’s about that time…the ACL Festival is right around the corner and now that the aftershow situation has been addressed, let the daily schedule planning commence!  It’s getting cooler outside and I’m extra excited about the possibility of good weather this year (let’s cross our fingers that the Dillo Dirt has been thoroughly soaked into the grass by now).  With just two and a half weeks to go until one of my favorite local events EVER, stay tuned into AGMG for the best festival picks for all three days of ACL.  Today, we’re looking at Friday.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8TH

The GIVERS – 11:45 am – 12:30 pm

Start out your festival experience with happy, quality indie pop music from Louisiana band The GIVERS.  Here’s how much buzz they have: they haven’t even released a full album (only an EP) and they’ve already played at several festivals, including SXSW, and have toured with the Dirty Projectors and Ra Ra Riot.  Guaranteed to put you in a good mood.

The Soft Pack – 1  – 2 pm

San Diego rock band The Soft Pack specializes in vintage garage band rock.  Touring in promotion of their self-titled full-length debut, go see them if you need a dose of back-to-basics rock ‘n’ roll.

Girls – 3 – 4 pm

Girls basically bills themselves as a tribute to the peace and love attitude in San Francisco and the glory of adolescence.  While that may seem overly nostalgic to some, at least the band is fully sincere.  My advice – see them for the nicely ingrained tributes to Buddy Holly and the Beach Boys and ignore the nouveau hippie vibes from the audience.

The Black Keys – 4 – 5 pm

Um, in an obvious time slot choice (since the schedule was rearranged to accommodate fans of both Broken Bells and The Black Keys), The Black Keys are one of the must-see bands of this year’s fest.  Their latest album, Brothers, is possibly their best work yet, making their functional and spare bluesy-garage rock sexy and soulful.  Don’t miss this duo on Friday afternoon.

The Sword – 5 – 6 pm

This is a rare opportunity – seeing a heavy metal band from Austin play in a decent time slot at the ACL Festival!  They played alongside metal heroes Motorhead at SXSW, and as one of the few metal bands to grace the fest in their own hometown, expect a very welcoming homecoming for The Sword.

Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich & Fussible – 5:45 – 6:45 pm

Trust me, you’ll have three days to fill your brain with indie and singer-songwriter tunes, so use this chance to see something different.  The Nortec Collective take traditional Latino styles of music and blending them with creative electronic beats, hence the “Nortec” – norteño plus techno.  This is a sound you won’t soon hear at any other show at the festival.

Sonic Youth – 7 – 8 pm

Despite other worthy time slot shar-ers, Sonic Youth is my pick for Friday’s early evening hours.  Don’t miss a chance to see one of the most influential early alternative/post-punk indie bands of all time.  Flannels required.

The Strokes – 8 – 9 pm

Another dose of flashback rock here.  With members who have launched solo careers and others who have dated Drew Barrymore, The Strokes are bona fide rock stars in all the senses of the words.  Their following in the States might be divisive, but given the option of seeing them or Phish…you should choose The Strokes.

Texas Performing Arts invites you to push the envelope of new music with pioneering composer and video artist Jean Piché. Since the early 1970s, he was one of the first composers to employ emerging digital audio technologies in a cycle of fixed media works acknowledged as seminal to the form. His works cross every genre of electro-acoustics but now center on video-music in which electronic visuals become an extension of musical discourse. His work aims for poetic expression beyond any avowed formalism, while alternately described as confounding, colorful and virtuosic.
